Inspiration Behind the Design

Inspired by a conversation between Ellie and her close friend and designer Cecilia Casagrande while traveling through France, Dark Botanical was imagined as a wallpaper that could bring the richness of still-life paintings into spaces like kitchens, dining rooms, and beyond. They envisioned a design where fruits, flowers, and nature’s tiniest creatures intertwine, evoking the beauty of a flourishing garden, captured at its peak.

Close up, ‘Dark Floral’ has many painterly details; from a distance; the effect is almost photographic. The soft transitions between dark and light create a stunning three-dimensional blurry effect, bringing depth to any space.

Inspired by the still life paintings of the Dutch Golden Age, Ellie painted this original floral composition in 2016. Since then, it’s been one of our best-loved designs, appearing in dressing rooms at Goop Chicago and window displays at Saks Fifth Avenue.

A warm spotlight is cast over a bursting bouquet of chrysanthemums, tulips, anemones, hyacinths and apple blossoms. This is an ode to nature at the peak of its splendor and beauty, and to the moment when a life achieves its best expression. The flowers symbolize a sense of wonder and gratitude for the brief, and best, of times that we have.

This is a loosely, gesturally painted floral design with an enlarged canvas texture. Daisies, delicate dots of foliage and grass explode out of a dark background.

‘Rose Decay’ began as a quiet little watercolor painting of roses. Initially, Ellie painstakingly painted smooth surfaces, subtle color gradations and soft lines. Once the ‘perfect’ rose painting was complete, she was overcome by an impulse to spill water onto the paper, causing the colors to bleed together.

Peonies, roses and ranunculi play the lead role in ‘Summer Squall’. These full-blooming flowers hover over a middle ground of exploding foliage. Several delicate, reclusive butterflies and beetles inhabit the vegetal shadows. It’s all in motion, a summer garden that’s beginning to stir with the oncoming passing of the season.

An elegant black and white floral print featuring large tulips that bend and reach in rhythmic movements, ‘Twisting Tulips’ evolved from an original graphite drawing inspired by old-fashioned botanical illustrations.

The title of this original floral print design references the tradition of still life painting, specifically during the 17th century in the Netherlands, when the Old Masters used exaggerated contrast to direct our attention to the subject of a painting. In this way, they employed areas of intense shadow, just as much as bright highlight, to lead us to the essence, and the real meaning, within the frame.

Incandescent Rose, with its powerful scale, places you in a garden at - or approaching - full glory, and provides you with a visceral experience of light, warmth, happiness and hope. The atmosphere created is one of light, warmth, openness, giving you a sense of possibility.

Subtle transitions in light and color gradually traverse this large-scale pattern of peacock feathers, symbolizing a fundamental transformation in the way the peacock sees himself. The sparkle and spectacle of his feathers open up to reveal the warm glow of a new, true and wild beauty within: the beauty of being for the sake ofbeing, rather than for beingseen.

A glittering lacework of lines traces the path of an imagined river, as seen from a bird’s eye view. Soft horizon lines suggest different landscapes in the distance. Open areas in the foreground motif invite you to see through to what lies beyond, and to ponder, as a bird might do, the potential of adventures that haven’t yet been had.

Inspired by the interplay of light and shadow in nature, Glitter Vine captures the soft shimmer of morning dew on delicate leaves. The composition balances fluidity and structure, with a subtly waving vegetal texture that creates a sense of movement across your walls.
