Ellie says, “From the start, this was meant to be an optimistic piece, with the focus on the intensely-lit central flower. But the shadows were just as important. I wanted to symbolize a triumphant moment, a bursting out of darkness and difficulty. But I didn’t want the shadows to be dark or unpleasant.

I believe that we achieve a deeper peace - individually and collectively - when we allow ourselves to experience ALL of our emotions, both ‘good’ and ‘bad’. This is when our hearts break … open, and why the glowing blue light in the background of this print softens and warms the scene. The viewer is assured that it is safe to enter into her deepest darkness. She can navigate the shadows there, knowing there is light on the other side.
