“In this design,” Ellie says, “I’m imagining that a ‘disturbance’ - a gust of wind, a change in the atmosphere, or a transformative life experience - has caused the normally very ordered system of the peacock’s tail feathers to release, open and fall away. They shed, they molt, they surrender. A protective barrier of beauty and spectacle breaks down and opens up. The peacock exposes his vulnerability, makes an offer of true connection, and invites the viewer in.

His feathers are cast out into the emptiness, creating a feeling of softness and spaciousness, peace and acceptance, mystery and invitation. In a buoyant, joyful and rhythmic dance, the feathers pull apart to reveal a world of richness and treasure - warm, glittering and glowing from within. This is the slow revelation of riches and rewards that await when rigid order is relaxed, control is relinquished, barriers are broken, and we are encouraged to look beyond surface and spectacle and let our true selves be seen.

As the feathers are released, so is the bird: freed from the burden of the external beauty with which he has been associated … being, at last, for his own sake of being, rather than for being seen.

It’s in this particular moment that the peacock becomes aware of his own true, wild beauty, and the full potential of his magic, power and imagination.”
